We are blessed to be living in a very beautiful area. Ribeira Sacra is land of rivers, vineyards, canyons and spectacular views hard to beat.
Just today we’ve been saying that we bought our delapidated 400-year old farmhouse primarily for its stunning views. At 500 metres altitude, we can see green fields and pastures of Lemos valley and snow peaks of the mountains further afield from our windows.
Both Sil and Minho rivers are within minutes drive from us, and on their incredibly steep riverbanks endless terraces of vines stretch for miles. Angled at 45 – 60 degrees, vine terraces of these canyons are accessible mainly by hand, with the grapes being carried on pickers’ backs to the top of the gorge, earning local viticulture the name of viticultura heroica (heroic viticulture) .
Numerous bodegas (wineries or adegas in Galician) offer vineyard tours, wine tastings and one can even participate in grape picking during harvest.
Ribeira Sacra producing award-winning red and white wines and some ingenious Galician liquors. In Monforte de Lemos – capital of Ribeira Sacra – centre of wine sells most of produce.
We can’t wait to be able to welcome visitors to our Casas 15 when we finish the renovation and introduce this magnificent part of the world to those who have never been. Hasta pronto, amigos!
